For many of us, social media is THE method for getting the word out about our businesses! Let's face it, almost everyone is on one platform or another, and the people who aren't know people who are and then it's all about word of mouth. What we are trying to say is, if you have a photography business (or any business really) we have found it very helpful to be on multiple platforms. All social media platforms are constantly changing and there is always something new to learn, but we just wanted to touch on three points we found very helpful in our marketing via social media game!
As far as platforms for photographers go, the popular ones seem to be Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. One reason for this could be because they have enormous audiences and are extremely visual. Facebook is our favorite because it is easy to manage our business account by way of our personal account where Instagram and Pinterest we need completely different accounts for personal and business. There are so many other platforms that you can be present on as well and they are all great options! So do a little research to find out where your target audience is and be there!
Oh yes, content is super important. Social media is not just about posting images you have taken as a photographer and expecting your calendar to fill up. The content you post needs to have substance. We like to post tips, tricks, and things that are trending and really engage with our followers. Having a blog is also great content that you can post the links to on your social media. However, be aware that Facebook is not particularly fond of links that take their users off of Facebook! It does tend to limit your organic reach if you are doing this, so be sure you are utilizing other methods (paid advertisements, for example) in order to reach more of an audience. Hosting contests or giveaways are also great ideas for good content as well as building an audience. Just be sure you are gearing those to your TARGET audience and not just anyone with ears and eyes. Make sure your content has substance and a reason to be posted, and is relevant!
It is so very important to have consistency on the social media platforms you decide to use. Social media is ever changing and it can be very easy to get lost in it without constantly posting. We have found that it's best to post at least once a day in the platforms we currently use (Facebook & Instagram). All this posting can be very time consuming, but luckily there are planning tools (apps) for scheduling posts. Keep in mind though that with Facebook, they aren't fond of outside scheduling companies. We recommend scheduling posts WITHIN Facebook rather than using tools such as Buffer, etc. (even though we do love those tools!).
We really have found that being social with your ideal client on social media is a game changer. Being a business owner is more than just selling your product. Customers are people and people love to feel noticed and cared about. So it's time to get social with your peeps on social media!!
